Making a mental model is like telling a story—if you get a good story, you’ll gain a deeper understanding about the characters’ motivations, reality, and mindset. If we tell our story well, it can help us make sense of our own life better. In the following paragraphs I’ll take you through the creation of causal loops as mental models.

Choose the problem.

To get started with your mental model, you need to find an explicit problem in a system that you want to investigate. Then comes the phase of data collection. It’s always more interesting to examine problems long existent or persistent despite our best efforts to fix them.
